Young Pierre Dumoulin-Borie joined the Foreign Missions in 1829, with the desire to be a missionary in Vietnam, where Christians and their pastors were then prey to recurrent waves of persecution. He arrived in Tonkin in May 1832, where he was arrested and sentenced to beheading in 1838. Saint Pierre Borie was canonised in 1988.
At the beginning of the 19th century, there was still no direct and regular maritime link between France and the Asian ports. It was therefore on a ship bound for Reunion that Fr. Dumoulin-Borie embarked on 1 December 1830. After a brief stay in Mauritius, he disembarked on 21 March 1831 at Saint-Denis de la Réunion, where he spent a month waiting for a Dutch ship to take him to Java.
Long before the MEP were really established in this region, after the Second World War, Fr. Borie was one of the first MEP’s to have worked in the Indian Ocean, with 3 of his confreres, as he tells us in this letter:
« L’Ile de France (connue aujourd’hui sous le nom d’Ile Maurice) appartient aux Anglais depuis 1814. La majorité des colons est sortie de France, la religion catholique y est prêchée sans aucun obstacle. Les Anglais en payent même les ministres. Le besoin de prêtres y est fort grand, on en compte à peine 5 à 6 dans toute la colonie.
Nous regagnâmes notre navire pour nous rendre à l’île Bourbon. Nous y fûmes reçus à bras ouverts par M. le préfet apostolique et autres prêtres. Comme nous devions y séjourner quelque temps, Mgrde Solages nous témoigna le désir qu’il avait que nous portassions un peu de secours à quelques-uns de ses prêtres. Cela nous plaisait beaucoup et déjà deux de nous étaient à 6 lieux de Saint-Denis. »
