The IRFA team is delighted to announce the launch of a new resource on its website: a portal dedicated to the history of the MEPs in Tibet!
The MEP mission in Tibet, active between 1848 and 1952, covered several geographical areas that were very distant from each other but all within the Tibetan cultural sphere:
- Kham (Eastern Tibet), also known as the “Tibetan Marches,” with the border areas of Sichuan and Yunnan
- Assam and Arunachal Pradesh (Southern Tibet)
- Sikkim
This new documentary portal directs researchers to resources produced by MEP missionaries in all these regions of Tibetan language and culture. In particular, you will find:
- Maps and information to help you find your way around the place names
- Biographies of the 67 MEP priests who worked there
- A selection of archive photos
- An inventory of the archives produced by this mission: linguistic documents, correspondence, links with other apostolic societies such as the Canons of the Great Saint Bernard…
- A selection of art objetcs
- A collection of 34 Tibetan works dating back to 1879
Resources (currently being expanded) are available in Tibetan, in particular the catalog of pastoral works printed in Tibetan in Hong Kong by the MEP Fathers.
Enjoy exploring!
